Summary

A remote island。 A stormy summer。 And an adventure as big as the Great Greenland shark 。。。

My name is Julia。
This is the story of the summer I spent living in a lighthouse。
The summer I almost lost my mum, and found a shark older than trees。
Don't worry though, that doesn't spoil the ending 。。。

Julia has followed her mum and dad to live on a remote island for the summer - her dad, for work; her mother, on a determined mission to find the elusive Greenland shark。 But when her mother's obsession threatens to submerge them all, Julia finds herself on an adventure with dark depths and a lighthouse full of hope。。。

A beautiful and uplifting story about a mother, a daughter, and love - with timely themes of the importance of science and the environment。

I have started a book club for adults with learning disabilities and this was the first book。 It's great, the story is still age appropriate which is great for adults and it's an easy enough read for anyone that may struggle with reading and I could easily read it out loud for the group and they loved it。 I played ocean sounds and they made sand castles with kinetic sand whilst I read。 They were really able to connect with this book。 Also I loved it。 Only issue is that I'm terrified of the ocean I have started a book club for adults with learning disabilities and this was the first book。 It's great, the story is still age appropriate which is great for adults and it's an easy enough read for anyone that may struggle with reading and I could easily read it out loud for the group and they loved it。 I played ocean sounds and they made sand castles with kinetic sand whilst I read。 They were really able to connect with this book。 Also I loved it。 Only issue is that I'm terrified of the ocean and fish。。。。。。 it's a me issue though, not the book。 。。。more

This story really touched my heart。 It's a beautifully told story of family, friendships, discovery, and mental illness。 The mental illness representation is also done really well。 This story really touched my heart。 It's a beautifully told story of family, friendships, discovery, and mental illness。 The mental illness representation is also done really well。 。。。more

I wanted to love this much more than I did。 It's such a beautiful book; the illustrations are stunning。 But the story didn't grab me, I couldn't quite understand why the Mother was allowed to get to the state she did without her husband intervening。 I will be keeping this to pass onto my nephew when he's older I wanted to love this much more than I did。 It's such a beautiful book; the illustrations are stunning。 But the story didn't grab me, I couldn't quite understand why the Mother was allowed to get to the state she did without her husband intervening。 I will be keeping this to pass onto my nephew when he's older 。。。more

Such a beautiful story, alongside beautiful illustrations。 Written so well, the author has nailed the narrator to sound exactly like a child’s thoughts。 Thoroughly enjoyable

Very thoughtful book。 Beautiful illustrations and insightful story about a family coping with mental illness - mostly from the daughters point of view。

Reading Julia and the Shark is like revisiting a memory。 It’s vivid, and real。 Julia’s relationship with her parents broke my heart。 I felt for every character trying to navigate through their own barriers。 I wanted to cuddle each one。 I loved the way kiran dealt with mental health。 It was an emotional read。

Heartbreaking story。 Beautiful poetic descriptions, well-crafted sentences and full of rich illustrations。 A children's book that dives deeper into the heavy topic of mental illness, making it accessible for both young children and adults。 The author and illustrators have put so much work into this book。 Heartbreaking story。 Beautiful poetic descriptions, well-crafted sentences and full of rich illustrations。 A children's book that dives deeper into the heavy topic of mental illness, making it accessible for both young children and adults。 The author and illustrators have put so much work into this book。 。。。more

Absolutely brilliant YA fiction from the author of The Girl Of Ink And Stars。 The stunning illustrations and the words are intertwined and perfectly compliment each other。 This is the story of the daughter of a marine biologist on the search for a rare shark。 The opportunity to spend a summer next the sea is a chance not to be missed but the time there is far from straight forward。 The author sensitively deals with issues of friendship, rocky relationships and mental health。

The best book I have read in a while。 So beautifully written, illustrations that enhance the story and I just don’t have the words to do it justice, even though there is so much meaning in words…

3。5 stars: This is a story about a young girl who goes looking for the Greenland shark with her mother in the Arctic。 The Greenland shark is the longest living vertebrae (around 400 years old)。 At first, this story gave me Song of a Whale vibes。 There are even references to that whale’s story in this book。 This has to be one of the most beautifully designed books I have ever seen in a middle grade novel。 The illustrations are breathtaking and add a lot to the reading experience。 VERY unique arti 3。5 stars: This is a story about a young girl who goes looking for the Greenland shark with her mother in the Arctic。 The Greenland shark is the longest living vertebrae (around 400 years old)。 At first, this story gave me Song of a Whale vibes。 There are even references to that whale’s story in this book。 This has to be one of the most beautifully designed books I have ever seen in a middle grade novel。 The illustrations are breathtaking and add a lot to the reading experience。 VERY unique artistry。 I loved the art design。 This book wasn’t quite what I expected。 This story was much heavier and darker than I realized, especially for a middle grade。 It was beautifully written and I enjoyed reading it。 This story is definitely not for everyone。 I think this book is good for the right audience。 This story has some heavy topics and if you avoid certain topics in your reading, you might want to look up the trigger warnings for this book。 。。。more

This is a beautifully illustrated story aimed at 9-11 yr olds about a girl called Julia who moves from Cornwall with her parents and cat to a small island off the coast of Scotland for a summer ,whilst her father repairs a lighthouse。 Her mum is on a mission to find a shark that is rumoured to be 500 years old。 It tackles a variety of subjects including bullying and mental health 。 Its a hard and sad read but a very good book。

WOW! Standing ovation for Kiran Millwood Hargrave and Tom de Freston because they created this absolute treasure of a book。 It is not news that KMH is an auto-buy author for me, and this book delivered big time! Truly a wonderful read。 Everything worrisome gets resolved in a natural, intelligent manner (not magic)。 If my daughter were 9 or 10 yrs old again, we'd probably read and discuss it。 *SPOILERS* the mother in the story has a mental illness (Bi-polar disorder) and some other characters are dealing with bullying and loss of parents。 However, the story is so honestly told through the eyes of the child Julia, I felt comfortable with the way difficult things were brought to understanding and happy res Truly a wonderful read。 Everything worrisome gets resolved in a natural, intelligent manner (not magic)。 If my daughter were 9 or 10 yrs old again, we'd probably read and discuss it。 *SPOILERS* the mother in the story has a mental illness (Bi-polar disorder) and some other characters are dealing with bullying and loss of parents。 However, the story is so honestly told through the eyes of the child Julia, I felt comfortable with the way difficult things were brought to understanding and happy resolution。 。。。more

Julia and the Shark is more a work of art than a work of fiction。 The illustrations add an ethereal quality which is integral to the writing, and the actual production of the book is also a significant part of the whole。 It is an object, not just a story。 The book tells the tale of Julia, who moves from Cornwall to the island of Unst for the summer so that her Dad can fix the lighthouse and her Mum can find a shark older than the trees。 There she meets a friend who teaches her about the stars – Julia and the Shark is more a work of art than a work of fiction。 The illustrations add an ethereal quality which is integral to the writing, and the actual production of the book is also a significant part of the whole。 It is an object, not just a story。 The book tells the tale of Julia, who moves from Cornwall to the island of Unst for the summer so that her Dad can fix the lighthouse and her Mum can find a shark older than the trees。 There she meets a friend who teaches her about the stars – but she also watches her Mum spiral into a desperate obsession that she doesn’t understand。 When her Mum is unable to complete her mission Julia, determined to save her, decides to take her place。 This is a story of loving someone with a mental illness and the anguish of watching them slip and being unable to catch them。 It is told from Julia’s point of view, and we see her go from idolising her Mum with a child’s simple acquiescence, to beginning to understand her – accept her – with all the complexity and compromise that that involves。 I don’t know how to rate this book。 As a work of fiction, for me it deserves a solid four stars, but as a work of art it definitely earns five。 My advice though – own the physical book, it’s magnificence cannot be recreated on an e-reader。 。。。more

I purely picked this up based on what it looked like (I was able to take a peek inside)。 But the story was definitely worth it, too!Julia is 10 years old and has moved to the Shetland islands with her parents over the summer because her mother wants to find a Greenland Shark。 Julia loves language more than numbers (something she and I have in common) and therefore narrates this story beautifully。What starts out as an adventure and a few quirky weeks of living in a lighthouse soon turns dark。 Why I purely picked this up based on what it looked like (I was able to take a peek inside)。 But the story was definitely worth it, too!Julia is 10 years old and has moved to the Shetland islands with her parents over the summer because her mother wants to find a Greenland Shark。 Julia loves language more than numbers (something she and I have in common) and therefore narrates this story beautifully。What starts out as an adventure and a few quirky weeks of living in a lighthouse soon turns dark。 Why? Well, I don't want to spoil too much but her mother's obsession with the shark and mental health issues take center stage here。 Though science and the importance of nature for us humans are also explored in a very nice (non-preachy) way。I've heard that this is a middle-grade book and can honestly say that it will probably allure to many middle graders and explain complicated topics to them brilliantly。 However, the author's writing style as well as the narrative itself are of the kind that can't really be placed in a box and labelled so this will definitely be fantastic for old(er) readers as well。 As a matter of fact, if I had to categorize it, I'd put it up there with A Monster Calls though what exactly happens to the children is quite different。Moreover, the hardcover edition is just stunning what with Tom de Freston's black-and-white illustrations that have yellow highlights popping out。 See for yourselves:One of those coincidental finds that changes a reader and their world and which I want to thrust at people to read。 。。。more

4。5 This book spoke to me deeply, as someone whose mother's mental health severely impacted my childhood。 The story, enhanced by the art, is densely atmospheric。I also found it a tough read because I know what it's like to not receive (the right kind of) attention from your parents。 Misleading the reader into believing Julia's mother was going to die (if like me the reader chooses not to check the back cover text) was therefore a poor choice from my perspective。 I nearly DNFed the book on page 1 4。5 This book spoke to me deeply, as someone whose mother's mental health severely impacted my childhood。 The story, enhanced by the art, is densely atmospheric。I also found it a tough read because I know what it's like to not receive (the right kind of) attention from your parents。 Misleading the reader into believing Julia's mother was going to die (if like me the reader chooses not to check the back cover text) was therefore a poor choice from my perspective。 I nearly DNFed the book on page 100 because everything felt so tense and I thought things were going to end even worse。Two minor points: grant applications are mostly handled online these days, and I didn't understand why Julia's mother was trying to find the whale before she had funding - until the very end of the book, when Julia tries to tag the whale with a tracker。 This should have been explained earlier。 。。。more
